In 1826, at the age of 83, the Reverend. William Davy, Rector & Vicar of Winkleigh All Saints Church, died. The remarkable man of God having left us with a legacy and lesson in life bigger and bolder than any of his sermons.

William Davy was described as “excelling in mechanics and gardening” and was a most extraordinary if not quite remarkable young but then rather obscure curate of Lustleigh and perhaps just a little eccentric. Reverend Davy is most notable in his lifetime for having written a huge manuscript that he called a ‘System of Divinity’ way back in the late 1700’s

William Davy's gigantic tome was to be made up of some 26 volumes in all, with each book comprising of and as commentators of the time record; "500 almost intolerably unreadable pages!" Now I'm not sure if that means that it wasn't printed very well or that it was particularly boring and long winded, but I suspect the latter!
So the pragmatic William Davy set about the daunting if not near impossible task of printing it himself! |

Ingeniously designing and building himself a timber printing press and purchasing some old type from a local newspaper owner who was convinced that he’d be taking it back within a week! William Davy spent every hour he could on his monumental project, except on Sunday of course, learning as he went and nobly assisted by his patient housekeeper Mary Hole.
Laboriously he produced, printed and bound the set, all with his own bare hands. Suffice as to say, he only managed to print 14 working copies of the set, such was the mammoth task and a labour which took him a full twelve years. A devotion above and beyond belief. |

Finishing the mammoth task in 1807 after a dozen gruelling and undoubtedly tiring years and hoping that his lives work would bring him some literary recognition if not a degree of notoriety in the future, he and his tome were turned down by even his own Bishops in Exeter. Fearing the worst, that now there would be no reward financial or literary recognition in his lifetime, the Reverend Davy decided to gift some copies of his work to literary dignitaries and other people who might just assist him with its publication. Sadly his work was received with little interest even from that quarter, so he took the balance of the books to London and gave them to reference libraries and Universities ‘for posterity.’ Clearly they couldn’t refuse the gift and thankfully didn’t.
You would have thought such a huge pursuit would have never allowed for any other venture to be considered in his busy life. However, grave and indeed fatal events were about to transpire within the nation which would put his mechanical prowess and inventive genius to the ultimate test.

On the 29th of August 1782, HMS Royal George, the flagship of the Royal Navy and the first British 3 masted warship ever to exceed 2,000 tons, bigger than any other warship at a colossal 2,079 tons, was undergoing minor repair work at Spit head in Portsmouth harbour to fix a faulty stop cock.

Its huge bronze cannons had been moved across its huge three tiered decks to shift the weight of the ship to one side, heeling her over just sufficiently to giveher a tilt to one side to allow for access to the previously submerged surfaces of her hull. Men could now work from small tender boats moored alongside. Fiddles were playing and officers were calmly watching the workmen and shipwrights who were cleaning the copper plates of the hull, whilst some 360 visitors from shore, including trades people, but in the main women and children who were on board bidding farewell to husbands and fathers, the ships crew members who were about to set sail on a long voyage to besieged Gibraltar under the command of Rear Admiral Richard Kempenfelt. ilure and no man was to blame! |

Whether through overloading, simple misbalance, human error or happenchance, with its centre of gravity heavily shifted, one carpenter made a nervous but repeated plea to the watch officer Lieutenant Holingbery, to shift and at least secure the massive cannons in case there was a problem. His request was tragically ignored and fell on deaf ears.
As if fate was listening, suddenly a gust of wind from offshore caught the vessel which rocked in the swell. Immediately the mighty 100 gun warship, the pride of the British Navy began to take on water through its lower cannon ports which had not been secured properly, left open to take on rum supplies whilst repair work was underway. The weight of the cannons shifted again and pushed her hard over and with a crack, the huge oak ship capsized. Rolling quickly on her side, sickeningly so and without warning, the pride of the Navy capsized very rapidly and she sank with the loss of nearly 900 lives, including the Admiral who went down with his ship. For centuries, the call of the sea for some Winkleigh sons has been an unquestionable challenge. Many would seek fortune in far off distant lands, others would defend our shores, others would save souls, others would give up their own and never return.
So moved was the Reverend William Davy by the Admiralty’s national call for help in re floating the mighty warship and salvaging its hapless crews remains and contents, that he set to work in an imaginative bid to try and devise a mechanical solution to the problem.
And William Davy’s invention? An ingenious diving bell.
Armed with his intricate and clever plans, Reverend William Davy set off to Portsmouth to present the Admiralty with his innovation. At first his invention was discounted as near impossible and at least impractical. Astonishingly, it was later fully implemented and the submersable vessel built with some degree of success, yet with claims from others that its original development and idea was their own.
Poor William Davy was not to make a penny from his brilliant invention but typically undiscouraged, perhaps seeing it as ‘the will, ‘ turned his hand to even more timber printing presses with pulley’s, ropes and of course his writings. Latterly, six volumes of his own sermons penned and published for the nation in a venture that lost him an absolute fortune.
