History of the Dorset Horn:
It's true to say, the Dorset horn sheep evolved from the now nearly extinct Portland breed of sheep, with the Dorset Horn sheep having the rare quality of giving excellent yields of sheep's milk which can be used in the main because of its high fat content for both cheese and ice cream making and has a sought after fleece of exceptional quality. An all rounder, the Dorset Horn's ancestry is somewhat sketchy with the general expert concensus believing that the Spanish ewe initially responsible for introducing their Marino sheep into the south west of England in the Middle ages which was in turn crossed with the Welsh horned sheep. The subsequent result was a brand new English breed of sheep which spread over Somerset, Dorset, Devon & onward throughout the farms of most of Wales. The new spectacular breed would be called Horned Dorsets.

The Dorset Horn is a large sheep by comparison to many other breeds, with the chief distinction of possessing large, curled horns which unusually appear in both Rams and Ewes. primarily bred for its high quality meat and for its superb fleece, the Dorset horn also makes a fine parent. As Dorset horn ewes are hardy animals, sheep which can produce up to three pairs of lambs in two years, surpassing most of the lambing capabilities of competitor breeds, it is a well chosen breed of sheep for many sheep farmers in Britain.

The Dorset horns I photographed on the sheep farm in Devon today were very intelligent and not in the least bit shy. Coming to the call of the shepherd and displaying incredible inquisitiveness. Some Dorset Horn rams do have a bit of a habit of prevailing a display of some dominance over humans though and can leave a nasty bruise, as can be confirmed by the farmer who introduced me to her flocks!
